Florida-based Hawkers Asian Street Fare opens Monday, June 3 at SPX Alley on the Eastside trail in Old Fourth Ward, according to the latest press release. The restaurant serves dishes based on food found at “hawkers” or Asian street food stalls.
The 4500-square-foot restaurant, designed by Atlanta firm Studio SOGO, includes a Beltline-facing patio with retractable doors, a large indoor/outdoor bar with salvaged architectural items from around Atlanta, and a poster wall with more than 1,000 hand-designed art and advertising posters by Adam Smajstrla. Hawkers-Atlanta also features a mural inspired by Krog Street’s tunnel in Cabbagetown and claims to have one of the longest bars found on the Beltline.
Expect a mix of dishes on the menu such as roti with Malaysian curry, pad Thai, Korean twice fried wings, Canton cod, and miso pork belly ramen. Some dishes come from co-founder Allen Lo’s family recipes, such as the Singapore “chili” crab, a soft shell crab with chili garlic sauce on a fried bao bun.
“The first time we visited Atlanta, we knew we wanted to be part of the Atlanta BeltLine,” says co-founder and CEO Kaleb Harrell.
Executive chef Travis Collum (formerly of Fifth Group Restaurants) says, “Being part of a team opening a new concept in Atlanta — a city with culinary dominance, and my home town — is incredibly motivating. I thrive on the energy of working and teaching in a kitchen environment. The Atlanta BeltLine is a sweet spot for me too — completely chill, yet with a strong buzz.”
The restaurant joins margarita bar Guac y Margys, pizzeria Nina & Rafi, cafe and cocktail bar the James Room, Butter and Cream ice cream parlor, Pour Taproom, and the forthcoming Bennett’s Market & Deli at SPX Alley.
Hawkers, owned by Harrell, Lo, Wayne Yung, and Kin Ho, first opened in Orlando in 2011. The restaurant now has six Florida locations and a location in Charlotte, North Carolina. Four other restaurants, including a location in Nashville, should open around the Southeast in 2019.
Open Sunday – Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.
